With large amount of data being generated in biology, computing /managing this flood of data has become a big challenge. Bioinformatics, the application of computational techniques to analyze the information associated with DNA, RNA and protein on a large-scale, has now firmly established itself as a discipline in molecular biology, and encompasses a wide range of subject areas from structural biology, genomics to gene expression studies.
We define bioinformatics as the integration of computers, software tools and databases in an effort to address biological questions. It’s approaches are often used for major initiatives that generate large data sets. We can classify bioinformatics broadly into genomics and proteomics. In genomics, the research spans from assembling the genome to analyzing the gene expression. Proteomics mainly focuses on understanding the function and structure of the proteins by creating theoretical models of proteins using homology, threading or ab-initio methods and then performing further analysis of it.
